3 R¹s in the Age of Bart- Half of all Canadian Children have their Own
T.V., and all educators are struggling to compete

This article explains the impact of media, especially computer games,
has on children between the grades of 3 and 10.
Computer games and television are becoming a much more dominant force in
the lives of Canadian children. A National survey of 5,756 children was
conducted. In terms of video and computer games, children in grade 3 and
4 reported that parental involvement does not exceed 50 percent. By
grade 7 almost 75 percent of parents never tell their child what they
can and cannot play.
Many types of media have extreme effects on children, half of the
children surveyed report that children between the grades 7 and 10,
have witnessed peers imitate a violent scene, this includes copying a
dangerous stunt. Terry Price president of the teacher¹s federation
reports that the schools need to implement a media literacy program.
This will ensure that students will become aware of harmful scenes and
advertisements in the media. The survey also found that 33% of children
in grads 7 and 10 believe that killing someone in a computer or video
game is not an act of violence. Students in grade 3 to 6, 60percent
report playing video or computer games most days and 38 percent of
children in grade 10 report it as a daily activity.
In order for children to understand media violence, parents need to
start talking to their children about what they see on television and
computer games. The majority of children say that their parents have
never talked to them about such issues, children who report having
talked about such issues are more likely to understand media and it¹s
influence

I think that its ok to spend some time playing video games, but a lot of
kids need to get a grip on reality. They should spend less time playing
video games, and maybe even get a life. The last thing we need is a
generation of social rejects. Way to go Mary!!!

Cool article!! I, speaking on my own behalf, played a good amount of
video games when I was young. I still do, but I never really considered
applying what I see in the media/video games towards real life. My mom
never spoekn to me about these things, but I guess the overall outcome
differs for every child/teenager. I still play computer games!! Some
have a small amount of gore/violence but I never actually take anything
literally. Its all fun and games!!! However, you article expresses a
good point and should be taken under careful consideration.
